  • Philippines Travel for the First Time: Manila and Subic!

Not knowing very much about the Philippines before I visited, I was pleasantly surprised by Manila and Subic and how they both reminded me of America. Take a tour of the medieval fortified city. Intramuros, in Philippine colonial history, was the original Manila. The Spaniards first landed here in 1571 and conquered this area, that was once a center of trade for Asian goods. It will take you an entire day, or longer, to discover Intramuros. Intramuros, which means inside the walls, used to be the political, cultural and commercial center of the Spaniards in the East. To ward off invaders, the Spaniards built the wall to protect the area. Intramuros housed Fort Santiago, the headquarters for colonizers from the Spaniards, the Americas, the Japanese, until the Philippine Independence in 1946. The Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was incarcerated in Fort Santiago. And in his prison cell he wrote his famous poem, Mi último Adió...

►Subscribe to my YouTube channel for more food videos: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe ►Follow my Instagram for current updates: https://www.instagram.com/migrationology/ Binondo, which is Chinatown in Manila, Philippines, is one of the best places to eat when you’re in Manila. You’ll find a good range of Chinese Filipino food, and overall, I was pleasantly surprised how friendly, clean, and nice it was. Binondo is also known to be the world’s oldest Chinatowns, and it really has some old style charm to it, and some delicious food to eat. On this particular Manila Chinatown food tour, my wife Ying and I set off in the morning to just walk around and eat what we saw. I had done some research and wrote down some places to eat, but we were just going to go ourselves and get a feel for walking around and see if we could find any other food. About halfway through the day, we were filming, and we randomly bumped in Nathan who watches our videos. He not only is from Manila, but he’s also from Manila Chinatown, and he brought us around for the rest of this food tour - so big thank you to Nathan and his fiance! Here are the place we ate on this Chinese Filipino food tour of Manila Chinatown (Binondo): Dong Bei Dumplings - This restaurant is legendary in Chinatown Manila for their pork and chive dumplings - 150 PHP ($3.01). The dumplings seemed a little on the expensive side, but they were pretty awesomely delicious. It was a great way to start this Binondo food tour. Estero Fast Food - Next, we stopped at a restaurant called Estero fast food, serving all sorts of Chinese Filipino street food. We ordered buttered chicken, fried frog legs, stuffed squid, and finally mixed vegetables. The food was all OK, nothing really stand out to me, and wasn’t a huge fan of the buttered chicken. Total price - 650 PHP ($13.05) Ho-Land Hopia and Bakery - This is a legendary bakery in Manila’s Binondo, and they are especially known for their original mung bean pastry hopia. Hopia original - 48 PHP ($0.96) New Po Heng Lumpia House - After meeting up with Nathan and his fiance, we headed first to go eat some lumpia. The lumpia was excellent, among the best fresh Chinese lumpia I’ve ever had. Lumpia - 60 PHP ($1.20) Siopao - Nathan knew of this hole in the wall spot, and their siopao were delicious, so fluffy and packed with flavor. Price - 20 PHP ($0.40) Serry Restaurant - Eating at Serry Restaurant in Binondo was the highlight of this Manila Chinatown food tour for me. We first had Soup Number Five (Soup #5), a notorious bull penis soup, and it was actually incredibly delicious. I loved it. Also, the black chicken soup was incredibly good, very herbal and very clean tasting. Total price - 280 PHP ($5.62) 899 Restaurant - Finally, to end this Chinatown tour, Nathan took us to one of his favorite restaurants in Binondo called 899, especially to eat pig intestines and braised tongue. The tongue was absolutely sensational, while both the big and small intestines were also delicious. Total price - 650 PHP ($13.05) When you’re in Manila, walking around Binondo, Manila’s Chinatown, is one of the best things to do. You’ll find some great food, and it’s just a fun place to walk around and explore on foot. You do not have to call by telephone to get a taxi because they are practically everywhere. When riding a taxi, make sure the meter is on and working. Colorful jeepneys ply through most places and are good for short distances. For a taste of local color, try riding the kalesas, which are available in some old neighborhoods in Manila. That was a great ride! I am Roselyn Cantos, showing you Manila.

On Day 5 in the Philippines, along with Anton and his family, we flew to the island of Boracay to spend 2 days. Things didn’t go quite as planned, as our first flight was canceled, but we did end up making it to Boracay at the end of the day, and then got checked into Discovery Shores Hotel. Anton’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/antondiaz 00:30 Going to the Airport - We took a taxi in the morning to the airport, and arrived and checked in. The line and security was pretty tight, but didn’t take too long. 2:08 Flight Canceled and Rebooked - Cebu Pacific is notorious in the Philippines for delayed and canceled flights, and today was no different. We were supposed to fly from Manila to Caticlan, but our flight was canceled, and we had to re-route on another flight to Kalibo airport, about 2 hours from Boracay. 2:36 Lunch at Airport - Lunch at the airport wasn’t anything too impressive, nor was the food supplied by Cebu Pacific. 4:55 Flight to Kalibo, Boracay - Finally, even our re-routed flight was late by 1.5 hours, but we finally took off the Kalibo Airport, towards Boracay island. 6:19 Where is Boracay? - Boracay is a small island off the coast of Aklan. The closest airport is Caticlan, and about 2 hours away is another airport called Kalibo. 7:19 Boat ride to Boracay - After taking a van for about 2 hours to get to the pier, we then took a quick boat ride to Boracay island and we headed to Discovery Shores Hotel where we stayed for 2 nights. 10:00 Dinner at Discovery Shores Boracay - Dinner was served on the beach, along with Anton and his family, and everything was pretty good. Disclosure: We were invited to stay at Discovery Shores Boracay, so we didn’t pay for our stay. But everything in this video, and all thoughts are my own. ---------------------------------------- This food travel video was produced by Mark Wiens and Ying Wiens. And in his prison cell he wrote his famous poem, Mi último Adiós, before being executed by musketry. Shelling in 1945 destroyed the city beyond recognition. However, bit by bit, Intramuros was reconstructed and has recaptured its historic past. This is Baluarte de San Diego, the oldest fortification in Intramuros. Now it is favorite spot among students and visitors. There are several schools inside Intramuros, including Letran, which was established in 1620. The present Manila Cathedral, built in 1954, resembled the old design and captured the beauty of the old churches in Intramuros. The Palcio del gobernador actually sits in the original spot of the old Spanish government building. Although modernization is inevitable, Intramuros is one of the best places to witness Manila's past. I am Roselyn Cantos, showing you Manila.
